The Blegan Knights

The capital of the kingdom is Blegan, and in Blegan are some of the most respected members of the royal knighthood. Hundreds of knights can be found throughout the kingdom of Aldaria, and their ruling council (known as “the 15”, highest ranked knights) is located in Blegan. They (the ranked knights) each have places on the royal council.

You will play the part of an adolescent who works as a squire for a knight who based in Blegan (though not one of ‘the 15’). In return for your work your assigned knight will train you to acquire the skills needed to one day be knighted yourself. There are no gender restrictions, titles of Sir and Lady are used respectively.

Knights most commonly come from noble families of various levels, but are not necessarily restricted to nobility. Peasants are sometimes awarded knighthood in response to some act of bravery that is recognized by the governing family of the region. The offspring of any knight, whether of noble birth or not, is eligible for squiring.

Create a character and post him/her in this thread. You will be given a couple of choices for your knight, and from there we’ll begin with a thread dedicated to your character’s journey. In creating your character please include a reason for eligibility to the knight hood (nobility, offspring of knight, etc), and a reason for why your character even wants to be a knight. Tell us what he/she looks like too, tall, short, skinny, fat, hair color, and anything else you can come up with.

This is a one-on-one system that boasts an opportunity for you to better control the pace of your game. Updates will be on no set date, it will depend on when you update (and of course when the moderator also updates). While the main threads are running a bit slow for the time being, these will be multiple times a week.

Here's my squire/knight-in-training;

Name: Ansgar Ulfander
Sex: M
Age: Adolescent
Appearance: Ansgar is tall for his age, gaunt and pale, dark of hair (which is kept short and tidy) and steely-eyed. He sports a distinctive bump on the bridge of his nose after it was broken during a fight with his brother Einar, as well as a slightly mangled left ear bitten by one of the family hounds.
Personality: As with his appearance, Ansgar is also dark in humor, ever serious and concerned chiefly with duty, dignity and protocol, all of which is an emulation of his father, Lord Ivar. He is desperate to impress him and others and emerge out of the shadow of his elder brother.
Eligibility: Born into minor nobility.
Background: Ansgar is the younger of two sons and so does not expect to inherit much in the way of his family’s power, property or profession. Nor does he want any of it, as he believes their connections to organized crime in the north to be ignoble. Despite this, he aspires to win his family’s favor - his father’s in particular - and distinguish himself. As is common of lesser sons, he has thus chosen to enter into the Blegan Knighthood, which he feels fits his own personal code of conduct.

Dreamshell, Ansgar Ulfander begins.

Name: Elias Mattes
Sex: M
Age: adolescence

Appearance: A slim young man of average height with shaggy blond hair that gets into his eyes repeatedly. One thing that stands out about him in particular is a brown leather glove he is always seen wearing on his left hand.

Personality: A young man who was forced into knighthood by his father in an attempt to win recognition for the house, Elias would much rather be a scholar. More often than not, he is more entranced by the strategy behind great battles rather than the splender and bravery of the knights who fought in them, unlike most kids his age. Although he still keeps some of his reclusive lifestyle from his younger years, he has recently started to come out of his shell, although he's still a bit shy.

Eligibility: Born into the Mattes house. (minor nobility)

Background: Because his mother died giving birth to him, and his father never re-married, Elias is the only child of the Mattes house. Although he's not exactly helpless in a fight, Elias isn't exactly enthusiastic about his impending squiredom, and is only becoming a knight because his parents want to become more influential in politics. With a dead mother and a father who's only thoughts were on winning influence from the Valdeck, Elias was mostly left to his own affairs and as a result the only person he would have regular contact with besides his father was his tutor, Master Tiyus. As the only adult influence in Elias's life, Master Tiyus was able to impress upon him the love of knowledge that he has today. He also managed to make Elias believe in Englar, the godess of rationality that Master Tiyus served. Although like most teenage males he has had dreams of war-related glory, he always pictured himself as a general or adviser, not a soldier on the front lines.

That's mostly solid, Bo. I wasn't picturing any of the names on the list as having an only son, but I like it; so I approve.

The only thing I'd really change is the self-taught thing. Most noble families, including one's listed as "minor" have a scholar to educate them as they grow older. The teacher would be addressed as "Master" and he or she would likely be a priest or priestess of [fill in the blank]. The sex of the 'master' would correspond with the sex of the pupil.

Name: Graves Lindenshield

Age: adolescence

Appearance: Blond haired, green eyed, with a spread of freckles. Tall, for his age and he has lanky muscles.

Personality: While having many problems in his life, he always strives to do the right thing. He tends to be clever and tends to think quickly to escape a sticky situation, be it with the guards or fellow street kids.

Background:He was raised in the city by a old women who sewed for a living. Growing up hearing the legends of knights and there bravery, made him want to become one. Then as with most children his dreams faded with his childhood innocence. As the old women started to fall ill and eventually died, he was pushed into the streets. This taught him the harshness of reality. He learned how to steal and beg for money quickly. What took longer was learning how to defend himself. He figured out how to run away fast, and trying out smart your opponent. Despite all these problems in his life. He kept most of the morals the old women instilled in him. He would always share what he didn't need to poor families or the homeless. If someone was out numbered in a fight he always felt the need to help. This led him one day to save a kid, who was being gained up on 3v1. Jumping into the fight he helped the kid send them packing. After the fight they became quick friends. Graves learned the boy's first name was Thymus and that he had just gotten into the city. They spent the rest of the day together parting ways at nightfall. The next day Graves heard a fanfare in the streets. Wondering what noble would bother coming into the underbelly of the city. He went to get a closer look. To his great surprise he sees Thymus getting out of the carriage. In complete shock, he hardly notices when a guard grabs him ruffly by the shoulder and pushes him into the carriage. He then learns his friend is part of the noble family Lanogeise and that they were sponsoring him to become a knight for saving there son. Thus his wishes are granted as he is propelled into his new future....

I was wondering if you could be the adopted son/daughter of one of the knights, would that be okay or would you have to be a biological child of a knight?

That depends on what you mean by "adopted". You could be the son of a widowed noblewoman who remarries to maybe a lesser house, the new husband 'adopting' you.

But if you're going with "plucked from an orphanage" then probably not.

See under your post count (below your avatar), there is the amount of gold you've earned. You earn gold for participating on the site. So sign up for another game and earn some more gold while playing. You were given 20 gold for signing up so you have enough to go for knighthood.

Moe came up with the brilliant idea of giving all new members a little bit of starting gold, so you have 20 more now than you did before. Meaning you can sign up if you're still interested.

Name: Kormean Stronghold
Description: Dark black hair. Hazel eyes. Dark tan. Strong arms ,chest, and back. He has a scare in between his shoulder blades from a bear attack.
Age: 16 or 17
Personality: Kormean has a short temper especially when it comes to his dad and he tends to hold grudges quite easily, but if he has no reason to be angry at you then hes a kind person and tends to help out when someone is in need. He has a strong since of justice ever since his dad went missing, most likely murdered.
Background: He was born into a poor family consisting of his five siblings Max, Nai, Aliyha, Bor, and Lester. He grew up to help his family with all the wood cutting and prefers axes to swords to date. His Father was a Became a knight when he was young. Helping out nobles in wars does that sometimes. He and his dad we very close, his dad would always tell Kormean all his war stories. His other siblings were not as interested in it as he was so his dad would go into more detail when it was just him and Kormean out in the woods cutting wood. One day his dad went into the town and mysteriously vanished at the age of thirty-nine. The popular theory is that he was murdered and deposited in the woods. Kormean held hope that his dad would burst in saying he was playing a very long cruel joke but after a year went by and that did not happen the truth hit him hard. Either his dad was dead, he was held captive by some freak, or the least likely he ran away with another family. After he realized it was one of those three and he probably won't be coming home he got careless in the woods and found himself in a bears sights. Before he could reacted the bear scratched his back deep. He swung his ax and hit the bear in the side but the bear didn't let go it instead proceeded to bit him on his shoulder with little more than hesitation. Kormean swung his axe hitting the bear in the neck this time killing it. He was badly injured but tried to get home anyway. He didn't make it ten step before he collapsed into unconsciousness. Luckily for him a hunter had been tracking the bear for some time and found him Kormean. The hunter brought him home and helped patch him up. The hunter then skinned the bear for Kormean. He keeps the pelt as a trophy for his first kill. After that he decided that maybe the woods were not his calling. So instead he joined the knights.

Yeah, bastards would be eligible. So long as they're recognized by their fathers, of course.

They would have to have a commer last name, though. Commoner last names are pretty much occupations or combinations of words; things like Thatcher, Cobbler, Goodman, Hardwood, Blackrock, Ironarm, Cheesemonger, Flintstone, etc.

Interestingly, a bastard, by definition, wasn't recognized by their fathers. At least in Medieval Wales;

Name: Galin Ridgewood
Sex: M
Age: 17

Appearance: Tall and Muscular (think Conan or Brock Lesnar not male modelesque) Brutishly handsome With striking golden colored eyes.

Eligibility: Bastard son of an unimportant minor nobleman

Family sigil/colors: The sigil is a burning oak tree and the colors are red grey and black

location: NE

Background: His father was a mean drunken man who was prone to give beatings to those who were under him (including his many children, his wife, and his servants/peasantry). Galin was conceived from a rape of one of the servant girls who was only fifteen at the time. His mother died in child birth due to her being so young. the only reason his father recognized him was due to the fact that Galin was his first son and he was worried about not having an heir.

His father later had many more children including 5 other males so Galin isn't in line for inheritance. Galin being the oldest male was the one generally trying to protect his other siblings from his fathers mad drunken rampages so he gets along with his other brothers and sisters besides his eldest sister who is two years older than him. she has always despised him for no reason other than he is a bastard. His father when sober has treated him with nothing besides discontent and when drunk or just in a bad mood has taken to beating him often to the point of injury and even near death.

He has only had four saving graces in his otherwise unforgiving life, His step mother, his siblings, his weapons trainer, and one of his mothers maids named evengale who he had a secret romance which started when he was 14 and ended three months before becoming a squire due to his father finding out and sending evengale to another noble mans land. Galin has no idea where she is but does know his father sent her away somewhere.His step mother has always been kind and forgiving to him despite the fact that his mother was a peasant. She has stepped in and taken good care of Galin and he considers her his actual mother even though he is aware of the circumstances of his birth.

Galin's father figure has always been his weapons trainer naimed Tyre. Tyre was a master swordsman and at one point led a mercenary band but turned from the life and settled down to teach others his combat skills. Tyre has always been rough with Galin but also understanding of his plight being that Tyre was also an unwanted bastard son. Tyre has taught Galin almost everything he knows about swordmanship so Galin can beat most full grown warriors in melee but he is severely lacking any long range combat at all. Galin's father recently died in battle so not needing to be there to protect his younger siblings or having evengale to keep him there he decided to put his combat skills to good use and became Tyre's younger brothers squire hoping one day to become a Blegan knight. Tyres noble house is a very minor one having little sway inpolitical matters.

Personality: He takes after his father in the sense that he's a big fan of the devils drink and he's quick to anger but having grown up with his demon of a father he try's his best to use his moral compass to guide him. He commonly reacts without thinking but is trying his best to remedy that. He always takes up for the underdog and despises bully's and often times gets very violent when dealing with them.

he dosnt have much in the way of book smarts but he knows the basics of reading and writing thanks to his stepmother who was a great poet and also due to her he is a bit of a philosopher often spending his free time wondering sbout the nature of humanity and what/who created everything.

When he's drunk he tends to be loud, raucous, vulgar, and quick to laugh and joke. when sober he tends to be quite a bit more quiet and constantly observes his surroundings, a trait he picked up from having to look out for his father and his fathers warriors who were no less brutal than he. Galin is also very good at reading people and is a bit of a charmer when it comes to the ladys but besides that he dosnt have much social grace being a bit to blunt and honest to make sny sort of diplomat.
